Day 0 - Dad falls
36 hours before I got The Call, I was walking up the living room platform of Broken Legs and tripped. Dad, in his Coach Cabello voice, asks me why I didn’t use the “stairs” as was intended in its design. I didn’t even answer. I just continued to clip his toes, by request
On Wednesday of this week, I just sat down at the library, when, in a quite different tone of voice, Dad asked of me my presence. I didn’t ask why, knowing he wouldn’t tell me.
When I got to Brookdale, Dad was in bed door open, wearing only his underwear.
Shit. Right away, I knew.
Again, without asking him why, Dad asked me to get for him the Red Walker, in the garage.
Luck #1 - the Red Walker
As soon as I grabbed it by its handles, I could tell immediately this walker was not the one Dad “purchased” for his own father: the walker was stable, easily maneuverable, with all four wheels staying on the floor at all times. Both handles were like new.
Later on I learned that John from next door gave it to Dad only hours previous to The Fall.
Only after doing what he asked, did I inquire of what happened: the Stairs of Broken Ankles had struck again!
Two people before him have suffered broken limbs at the very same set of non-stairs - in the presence of its Designer!
Dad patiently asked for his pants, for they were on the floor next to The Throne. Dad admitted to being hungry, for he had not eaten dinner. Dad usually eats at 3pm!
I returned with the pants. He gave me all the cash in his wallet and asked me to get chicken. While I fetched his pants, Dave called. Dad was telling Dave that I was present and finished the call.
I learned little else about the incident. I grabbed a bag of ice and put it UNDER his right thigh. Then I filled another bag with ice and put it on TOP of his right thigh. As best as I could deduce, that’s the part of his body that met the floor or the earth.
I asked Dad to call Dave back: I asked Dave if he had crutches. He said he did. As I left Dad to get chicken, Dave texted me, informing me where I could find the crutches.
